Review from fRoots magazine August/September 2006
The Working PartyLive At The Mill

own label TWPPCLCD1

One-off super group of Chris Parkinson, Simon Mayor, Maart Allcock, Chris Leslie and Troy Donockley, convened by Martin Bell to record a concert for an interactive DVD to help aspiring folk sessioners. Apparently the original idea came from the landlord of Bell’s local who wanted to impress his regulars by bashing out a few trad tunes on a mandolin. Needless to say, with the class of musician involved, this is one of the finer jamborees you’ll come across. The playing on the chiefly Celtic melodies – though there are some English sources and a couple of Leslie perennials – is fluid and expansive. What’s more it sounds like all involved are having a ball, in all reality they probably were, this sort of spontaneity a studio could never replicate. The tunes may be familiar but hey, the way everything blends together on the final selection is captivating and I doubt that I or you have heard a finer or more stately a version of that old war horse Sigh Beg, Sigh Mor. A mere eight tracks, but thumbs up anyway. Hope this isn’t just a one-time shot, those involved should do more. All you wannabes keep your eyes peeled for that DVD.
