The Quicktime Video Downloads have been converted to iTunes .m4v format to take advantage of the new video iPods and iPhone. If downloaded to your computer they will open up by default in Apple iTunes, but the files can still be opened by the Quicktime Player.
These videos are "virtual" folk music sessions consisting of well known traditional Irish, Scottish, English and North American tunes. They will help you to learn an instrument more easily by allowing you to see and hear other musicians playing along with you.
Start by playing along with the slow motion versions of the tunes. They have an 'animated music lead sheet', which turns the page every four bars or so (the red-colored bar gives a 'look-ahead' facility). This makes reading standard music notation a breeze and I think most people will find it a lot easier to understand the concept of rhythm in music.
There are individual instrument mix videos here are for the Fiddle, Accordion, Uilleann Pipes, Whistle and Mandolin students.
The animated music notation is there as a guide to the tunes only. It's important that you listen carefully to how the different musicians interpret the tunes on their instrument and how they embellish each tune. Watch carefully how the musicians hold their instruments too, there are lots of clues here that will help you to learn. Have fun.
Oh, and if you're not planning to learn to play an instrument and just want to see the band play. Just download the file named 'DMx1All' (or 'DMx2All etc.) from each music cue, sit back, and watch them go.
IMPORTANT!
Once you've paid for you're download, PC Users must Right-Click your download link, and choose "Save Link As..." or "Save Target As..." to save the file to a location on your computer. Whereas Mac Users should Alt. + Click your download link and choose the "Save to Disk" command to save the file to your computer.
Even though these files video are compressed they will still take ten to twenty minutes to download on most UK broadband connections as they range in size from 50 to 90 megabytes. This is all very well and good, but for those of you still on "dail up" and those who have no interest in owning a computer, I can provide you bespoke DVDs. Contact me for further information.
